Here is a link to some excellent photographs archived (and uploaded to Flickr) by the Library of Congress. A sample is below, but there are thousands of other images.

From the Flickr site: These vivid color photos from the Great Depression and World War II capture an era generally seen only in black-and-white. Photographers working for the United States Farm Security Administration (FSA) and later the Office of War Information (OWI) created the images between 1939 and 1944.

This is right along the lines of what we should be looking at when developing pieces for work uniform. heavy-duty work clothes with delicate details. Details that are born out of utility but handled gracefully. Clothes that are meant to get dirty and oily and are actually enhanced when soiled.
